The truth be told
This book brings together ten of Danny Lyon’s most powerful photo essays from the past 40 years. In the early 1960s he had become convinced that the main US outlet for photo-journalism, Life magazine, was reactionary, and determined to make photographs that were ìstronger, more truthfulî. And in doing so he pioneered photographic ‘New Journalism’. He worked by immersing himself with his subject, recording audio as well as pictures; his most famous photo essay, The Bikeriders, was published in 1968 and was four years in the making. His ìmore truthfulî imagery was often controversial and deemed unsuitable for publication at the time, but now it is brought together in a single memorable volume, each essay introduced in Lyon’s own words.

Memories of Myself, essays by Danny Lyon, is published by Phaidon in May 2009 at £45, ISBN 978-0-7148-4851-8.
